Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is produced by sorting, shredding, drying and screening mixed waste to remove non-combustible and problem fractions and to raise and stabilise its calorific value. The result is a more consistent fuel that many conversion technologies can use more reliably than raw waste.
Feedstock preparation is not free: it adds equipment, energy and operating cost. Whether it is worth doing depends on the waste, the conversion route and the tolerance of the downstream process. Deciding how much preparation a project needs is an engineering judgement, made against the specific waste stream.
